Development and Test Environment in the Cloud Speeds up Delivery

Problem

A large telecommunications company was working on SharePoint development project with a very tight timeline. Although, they had a traditional datacenter with all of the associated development, test, and production environments, they were unable to use the development and test environments for the project because they were already being used for another project. The team was told that they would have to wait 2-4 weeks before they would be granted access to the servers. Because of the tight timeline, if they waited for the quality assurance team to finish working on the other project, they would miss their deadline.

Approach

CloudAdvantage did a quick assessment of the servers needed in the development environment and then proposed that the client build a temporary development and test environment in the Amazon EC2 cloud.

Result

Instead of waiting 2-4 weeks, the client was able to get the development and test environment up and running in 1 day. This allowed the client to stay on schedule and get their testers to work immediately. On top of the time savings, the client was able to save a significant amount of money due to the fact that no new servers or software had to be purchased in order to support the development effort. Instead, the client took advantage of the pay-as-you-go model and was able to just as easily de-provision the servers once the project was completed.
