Designing an Expert Identification System for a Large Federal Government Agency

There exists a great wealth of knowledge in any professional organization, yet often the people inside don't know where or how to find it, or that it even exists.  This was the case at a prestigious federal institution who turned to Synteractive for a strategy to help bridge the knowledge of the people within.  Often, people would find out who is an expert on what by simply learning over time, or by word of mouth.  It is not as effective or as complete as a strategy and system to collect and allow easy access of relevant information about people and their knowledge, skills and experience. 

 

Utilizing as much of what was already available on the marketplace, Synteractive designed a system that would allow faster access of who had what expertise within the organization by many orders of magnitude.  It was all in the strategy and design, as web-based modular tools were put together to yield a system where anyone could search for a subject they needed information on, and instant get back resources of who could help them.  It provided a form of social networking aimed directly at solving the very core business problem of finding the expertise needed to achieve organizational goals. 

 

There has been a greater cohesion of people with mutually helpful expertise, that would not have collaborated otherwise.  Those that may not be in the immediate workspace of another, but have valuable knowledge and experience into the problems they were facing, are now able to easily get in contact.  The solution Synteractive developed has pooled the available intrinsic human knowledge in the organization into a searchable interface.  The organization as a whole has been able to come together more tightly.  More than just the tool that searches skills, expertise and experience of the people in the company; it was the strategy and design Synteractive envisioned that resulted in the deepest benefits.
